A network specializing in sending Malagasy women to China for marriages with Chinese nationals has been dismantled by the National Police. The case was uncovered on August 6, following the interception at Ivato International Airport of a woman who was scheduled to travel to China, amid suspicions of human trafficking. Four individuals suspected of being linked to this case were presented to the prosecutor on Monday and placed in pre-trial detention.
This form of exploitation, through marriages with Chinese nationals, has existed for several years. The investigation, entrusted to police officers from the Brigade for Special Investigations into Fraud and Human Trafficking at Ivato, revealed the network’s modus operandi. The young woman intercepted was to be married to a Chinese national. She had allegedly been persuaded to accept the departure in exchange for 10 million ariary, a sum to be paid once she arrived in China and the marriage was celebrated. According to initial findings, deceptive practices were hidden behind these marriage proposals.
The investigation also identified a network responsible for recruiting and organizing the departure of Malagasy women to China. Four people, including three women and one man, were arrested on August 6 while they were still preparing the departure of other women. Five fake stamps, several documents, and ten Malagasy passports were found in their possession. According to the investigation, several women had already been sent to China by this network. The network’s earnings are estimated at approximately 100 million ariary per woman.
Some victims reportedly suffered violence and mistreatment after being recruited and deceived under the guise of these alleged marriages with Chinese nationals. The investigation is ongoing to identify other potential victims and additional individuals involved in this human trafficking network.
