Presidential Security: Donald Trump reportedly changed planes to leave Turkey in July due to Iranian threats, reports Washington Post

Donald Trump reportedly left Turkey secretly aboard a smaller aircraft than the planned presidential plane, the Washington Post reports, citing an anonymous U.S. official. The newspaper highlights that this change of aircraft was justified by threats attributed to Iran.

The U.S. President was initially scheduled to return to the United States aboard the older Air Force One model following the NATO summit held in early July in Turkey. He had even boarded the aircraft in front of cameras before being discreetly disembarked to join another plane, the newspaper recounts.

Donald Trump then reportedly met his White House team and the accompanying journalists in the United Kingdom before continuing his journey to the United States aboard the new presidential aircraft, a Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar.

These precautions were taken due to Iranian threats targeting the U.S. President, according to the Washington Post. Iran, which shares a border with Turkey, was directly involved in tensions with Washington during that period.

Donald Trump had initially downplayed the risks associated with his trip before mentioning alleged assassination attempts during the return flight. “There are many enemies of the United States who have him in their sights,” said White House Communications Director Steven Cheung in a statement sent to AFP. He affirmed that authorities are using “all tools” available to respond to these threats.

Journalists on board Air Force One had also been instructed to keep the window shades closed, a measure usually applied in conflict zones. The new aircraft intended to become Air Force One is itself the subject of security questions. Concerns had notably been reported by the New York Times regarding its protective equipment, which was deemed different from that of previous presidential planes.
