Following Ambovombe, the NGO Médecins de l’océan Indien (MOI) is heading to Toliara, the capital of the Atsimo Andrefana region, for its 74th mission in Madagascar. About fifty missionaries are expected in Toliara from October 7 to 17, 2026, for a medical, surgical, and dental campaign, offering free consultations and care, as well as training and prevention initiatives.
More than 15,000 patients are expected to benefit from care that is often inaccessible to them due to financial or geographical constraints. “Some people travel 100 or even 150 kilometers on foot or by cart because they know they can receive free treatment,” said Danil Ismaël, vice-president of the NGO, during the press conference presenting the mission on Saturday.
As with every mission, several specialties will be mobilized, including surgery, cardiology, ultrasound, gastroenterology, general medicine, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and dentistry. The mission also plans to distribute glasses and conduct oral hygiene awareness campaigns for primary school children.
The operation will be organized into two parts: a hospital delegation will work at the Toliara Hospital Center, while a mobile team—including general practitioners, a pediatrician, dental surgeons, prosthetists, and an outpatient surgery unit—will travel to peripheral localities in coordination with local health authorities.
After the mission, some volunteers will remain for a few days to work with local teams and ensure follow-up. Medical supplies and medications will also be left with local facilities to support ongoing patient care.
Post-graduate training for local health professionals and interns at the Toliara University Hospital Center remains a key component of this 74th mission. The mission, named the “Santé Nourmamode Hiridjee” mission, is primarily funded by the Departmental Council of Réunion, with support from Bachir Hiridjee and various sponsors from Réunion and Madagascar.
