The first day of the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup turned into a nightmare for Madagascar’s Ankoay. A forfeit followed by a defeat hampered the start of their campaign in Wuhan.
Competing in a highly competitive group where every match is crucial for qualification, the Malagasy selection suffered two consecutive setbacks. The players first conceded a defeat by forfeit against Latvia, before logically falling to Uganda with a score of 7 to 14.
The scenario of the first match immediately complicated the situation for the Ankoay. Deprived of the opportunity to defend their chances on the court against the Latvians, the national team had to quickly regroup for their second encounter of the day. However, facing more impactful and dominant Ugandans in the paint, Madagascar never managed to turn the tide.
The match statistics perfectly reflect the offensive difficulties encountered by the national coach’s protégées. The Malagasy converted only 6 out of 12 one-point shots, missed all 12 of their two-point attempts, and validated only a single free throw. This inefficiency in front of the rim weighed heavily on the outcome of the game.
Individually, Mianjasoa Rakotonirina finished as the top scorer for the Malagasy side with 4 points. She also stood out under the rim by grabbing 9 rebounds, marking the best performance of her team in this sector. Justine Etienne Rahariarivony added 2 points and 6 rebounds, while Elinah Rafarisoa scored 1 point. Taratriniaina Murielle Erica Ramahatra did not find the net.
On the other side, the Ugandans imposed their athletic power. Mary Nambogo and Shillah Aber Lamunu led their collective with 5 points each. Lamunu was particularly active on the boards with 7 rebounds, well supported by Nambogo (5) and Sylvia Nantongo, who scored 4 points and 6 rebounds. In total, Uganda dominated the aerial battle (26 rebounds against 18 for Madagascar), showing much better clarity in their offensive choices.
This tournament start places the Ankoay in an uncomfortable position, but their chances of bouncing back remain intact. The group stage will conclude on September 17 with two decisive confrontations against Tonga and then Spain.
To hope for a qualifying spot, the Malagasy selection must imperatively learn from its mistakes, regain accuracy, and show character. With their backs against the wall, Madagascar no longer has the right to make mistakes: Thursday’s meeting must be the moment of revolt.
