At the entrance to the village of Joffreville, known as Ambohitra before colonization, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Benedictine Monastery is gradually establishing itself as an iconic landmark of the Montagne d’Ambre. “Our site currently offers tourist accommodation and meals to international and domestic visitors, with several rooms and reception areas providing breathtaking views,” says one of the nuns in charge of hospitality.
Beyond its natural setting, the sisters have fostered links with the local population. A boutique sells handicrafts made by villagers and herbal products grown in the monastery’s garden. Recently, the site hosted top-performing students from the five districts of the Diana region, offering them a peaceful environment for relaxation.
The monastery’s growth mirrors that of Joffreville, now a popular stop for visitors to Montagne d’Ambre.
