The countdown has officially begun. With ten months left until the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games (JIOI), the Comoros are urged to accelerate their preparations. Mohamed Issimaila, President of the Games Commission, has sounded the alarm, calling for an urgent mobilization of bilateral partners, according to an alert published in the September 17th flash edition of La Gazette des Comores.
The stakes are high for the archipelago, which must host delegations and competitions amidst significant structural challenges.
Difficulties in water and electricity supply, coupled with a still-limited transport network, are among the primary concerns for both residents and organizers.
On the ground, several projects related to the Games are nevertheless progressing, notably the athletes’ village and various sports facilities. It remains to be seen whether the schedule will allow for the delivery of all infrastructure within the allotted time.
As the deadline approaches, the 2027 JIOI represents a dual challenge: successfully hosting a major regional sporting event while meeting the daily expectations of a population that hopes, above all, to regain regular access to running water.
