Madagascar is cracking down on online scamming operations. More than 200 foreign nationals have been convicted of scamming by the Malagasy justice system. Among them, about twenty are from African countries, while the majority are from Asia, particularly China. The sentences handed down range from two to five years in prison for low-level operators, and five to ten years for organizers and employers.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the Chinese nationals are expected to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home country. Following their convictions, an initial group of 50 Chinese nationals was transferred to China. Described as suspects by the Chinese Embassy, the detainees were handed over to the competent Chinese authorities on Tuesday. The Embassy emphasized that the Chinese government is resolutely fighting crimes related to online fraud, and no leniency will be shown to Chinese citizens involved in such activities. The Ministry of Justice indicated that further transfers of Chinese nationals are planned. These transfers are conducted under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, known as the Palermo Convention, which Madagascar joined in 2005, and pursuant to a judicial cooperation agreement signed between the Great Island and China.
