TECHNOLOGIES – Egypt plans to build a $1 billion, 200 MW AI data center

An ambitious project. Egypt plans to build its first large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center, with a target capacity of 200 MW and an investment of approximately one billion dollars. The project is set to begin with an initial 20-megawatt facility, costing 200 million dollars, over an initial three-year period.

The future center will be developed by Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies, the latter being presented as Nvidia’s primary partner in Africa. It is expected to utilize the accelerated computing technologies of the American group Nvidia, which is at the heart of the current AI boom.

The project was announced on Wednesday by the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Raafat Hindi. It comes against a backdrop of increased competition between the United States and China to expand their technological influence in the Middle East and Africa.

The topic was notably discussed during the visit to Egypt by Chinese President Xi Jinping, his first in ten years. Together with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, he pledged to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in AI and technology, although no formal agreement was announced.

According to Bloomberg, Huawei had proposed building a data center in Egypt prior to Xi Jinping’s visit. Washington reportedly subsequently made a competing offer involving Nvidia, AMD, and Microsoft.

Egypt aims to attract more international partnerships to become a regional hub for data centers, according to state media. However, the project also raises questions regarding energy supply, as AI data centers can consume up to five times more electricity than traditional facilities.

The development of such infrastructure remains slower in Africa, partly due to the fragility of electrical grids in several countries. Egypt, Africa’s second-largest economy, has itself been facing difficulties in meeting all of its electricity needs for several years.
