ART AND CULTURE – Isalo weaves an ode to artistic transformation

Since the end of September 2026, nearly 15,000 m² of textiles have been deployed in Isalo to bring a monumental butterfly to life. Titled “Project Transformation,” this work by Belgian artist Wim Tellier, known for the Focus Festival in Ankasy, is one of his most ambitious artistic projects. Installed at the Le Jardin de Roy site, it mobilized a local and international team coordinated by Minange Rasoanandrasana.

Photographer Hugo Van Beveren documented the various stages of the project, while Tikih Ranjisoa, a travel influencer recently crowned the best Travel Content Creator in the Indian Ocean, shared the behind-the-scenes with his audience.

Behind the scale of this installation lies a true logistical feat. The deployment of thousands of sarongs over such a vast area required meticulous organization. The colors and patterns of the textiles formed a vast visual composition during the day. At nightfall, the interplay of light and shadow transformed the work in turn.

The choice of the butterfly is not trivial. A symbol of transformation and resilience, it evokes the ability to overcome trials, reinvent oneself, and continue one’s journey. Through this ephemeral creation, Wim Tellier highlights diversity, change, and the strength of the human being.

The photographs taken by Hugo Van Beveren will allow for a record of this extraordinary installation, created in the heart of Madagascar.
