A successful harvest. The three representatives from the country at the third edition of the Regional Education and Development Tournament (REDT) secured four gold medals this weekend. The wrestlers from the Great Island each won a gold medal in the Olympic wrestling event on the mat this Saturday.
Noël Louis François Rakotomanga was crowned champion in the senior -57 kg category. The two other young athletes in the U17 category, Zetony Lancia Razafimahova, won gold in the -55 kg class, and Francia Nomenjanahary Randriatiana took gold in the -45 kg category.
The country’s flag bearers competed in the beach wrestling tournament on Sunday. Francia Nomenjanahary Randriatiana achieved a double by winning a second gold medal in her category. Due to being 100g overweight at the weigh-in, Lancia Razafimahova was not allowed to participate. Lacking opponents in his -55 kg category, François Rakotomanga was moved up to compete in the -70 kg category. He managed to win his first match against a Mauritian before falling to a Zambian opponent. Due to an injury, François was unable to continue the competition.
