VATOMANDRY – Eighteen people survive a shipwreck

Tragedy. Eighteen people have escaped death following the shipwreck of the vessel LCT Caroline between Andovoranto and Vatomandry. Having departed from Toamasina on Sunday, June 28, at 5:00 AM, the vessel was carrying twelve crew members, six passengers, two hundred and fifty-four tons of cargo, and a truck with a trailer.

Around 6:30 PM, the crew reported a leak to the Madagascar Port, Maritime, and River Agency (APMF) in Toamasina. Three other vessels—the Maeva, the Savanah IV, and the Espérance VII—were mobilized to attempt to provide assistance, but unfortunately, contact with the Caroline was lost.

At 10:00 PM, the APMF dispatched the speedboat Atsantsa IV to follow the route of the distressed vessel. At 3:00 AM, a sailor was pulled from the open sea, confirming that the Caroline had sunk. Search efforts continued, and yesterday at 1:30 PM, the other seventeen individuals were found safe and sound off the coast of Dombala Island.

The loss was significant. The ship and its cargo were swallowed by the sea, but all eighteen people on board survived.
