The official launch of voter registration for the electoral roll overhaul took place yesterday. The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) is calling for a collective citizen effort to ensure a clean and comprehensive list.
Thierry Rakotonarivo, President of the CENI, emphasized that the commission cannot achieve this goal alone and urged citizens to take responsibility by registering at their local Fokontany offices or through the online portal. The census period will last four months, ending on November 25, with a provisional list expected by January 9.
Rakotonarivo also challenged political parties and civil society organizations to move beyond mere criticism and actively participate in the census committees. He stressed that the reliability of the electoral roll is a pillar of democratic credibility, especially ahead of the 2027 constitutional referendum and general elections.
Furthermore, the CENI president reiterated that Malagasy nationality is a mandatory requirement for registration. This statement has drawn attention regarding the case of former President Andry Rajoelina, whose nationality status has been a subject of intense debate, potentially impacting his eligibility for future electoral processes.
