Mining resources and industrial processing opportunities are at the heart of the call made to foreign investors by Prime Minister Mamitiana Jeannot Ruffin Rajaonarison.
At the 2026 World Investment Forum, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from October 25 to 27 in Doha, Qatar, the head of government invited international partners to invest in Madagascar. The stated goal is to leverage national wealth, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy.
“Let us trust each other. Choose Madagascar,” said Mamitiana Jeannot Ruffin Rajaonarison during his speech at the forum. This call reflects the government’s desire to attract foreign capital and build sustainable partnerships. For the population, the challenge is to see these investments translate into income-generating activities and employment.
The government aims to move beyond the model based on the extraction and export of raw materials. Processing minerals locally could create more added value in the national economy. The establishment of refining and processing companies is among the avenues discussed with UNCTAD officials.
This orientation could foster the emergence of industrial activities, stimulate labor demand, and open opportunities for local businesses. However, the impact will depend on the realization of projects, available skills, and the ability to integrate national workers and suppliers into production chains.
Local processing is also a key issue for young people seeking employment. The development of new industrial units could create technical and specialized positions, provided that appropriate training accompanies the investments. Small and medium-sized enterprises could also find opportunities in transport, maintenance, and industrial services.
On the sidelines of the forum, the Prime Minister met with Indonesian investors to explore possibilities for economic cooperation and access to international markets. Discussions with UNCTAD also focused on combating the illicit exploitation and export of mining resources, as well as the transparency of their management.
To attract investors sustainably, the government is highlighting reforms aimed at improving the business climate, fighting corruption, and strengthening stability. Their implementation will be decisive in securing investments and improving the management of natural resources.
The central question remains that of benefit sharing. Mining investments can only contribute sustainably to improving living standards if their benefits also reach workers, local businesses, and communities. Local mineral processing is a potential lever, the effects of which will depend on the conditions under which projects are implemented.
