Colonel Michaël Randrianirina has called upon the patriotism of JIRAMA employees to address the persistent electricity supply crisis. Despite massive state subsidies totaling one trillion ariary, power outages remain a critical issue.
During a ceremony in Mandroseza for the handover of twelve tanker trucks, the head of state emphasized that while the government provides the necessary funding, it is the responsibility of the staff to ensure operational efficiency. He expressed frustration that despite significant financial support, the situation on the ground has not improved.
JIRAMA recently announced two-hour load shedding during peak hours in the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA), citing a 22 MW deficit caused by technical failures at the Ambohimanambola combustion turbine and low water levels at the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant.
General Hajatiana Rasolomanana, Director General of JIRAMA, acknowledged that fuel costs and private power purchases heavily burden the company’s finances. He outlined a strategy to reduce dependence on private producers by investing in renewable energy, particularly solar projects in areas such as Mangatany, Ambatomirahavavy, Ilafy, and Ampangabe. He also warned that contracts with private partners must be fair and sustainable, ensuring that the company’s growth is not stifled.
