MAMITIANA RAJAONARISON: ‘Tourism is enough to develop the country’

Tourism can become one of the main engines of the country’s development. This is the conviction expressed by Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison in Mahajanga.

For the head of government, the natural and cultural wealth available in the country already constitutes a sufficient basis to make tourism a true economic and social lever. ‘Tourism is enough to develop Madagascar, given the richness and beauty of our natural heritage,’ declared Mamitiana Rajaonarison. Beyond the arrival of visitors, the sector can drive several activities that directly affect daily life, such as transport, crafts, commerce, catering, accommodation, culture, and services.

The challenge also lies in the regions. The development of new destinations can create opportunities for local populations and foster the emergence of small economic activities. An artisan can sell more products, a transporter can expand their business, and those in accommodation and catering can benefit from the increase in visitor numbers.

Tourism can thus contribute to creating jobs and income while adding value to local resources. Promoting cultural and natural heritage is also a way to showcase different regional identities and strengthen the activities that depend on them.

To achieve this goal, the Prime Minister insists on the need for collective action. The State, the private sector, professionals, and partners must work together. Improving roads and access infrastructure, developing connections and air links, and training professionals are among the necessary conditions for the sector’s progress.

This ambition is also part of a technological transformation. The theme of this World Tourism Day highlights digital technology and artificial intelligence. These tools can help promote less-frequented destinations, facilitate bookings, and improve the visitor experience.

Small operators can also take advantage of this evolution to gain visibility and reach new customers. However, technology cannot replace human hospitality. Know-how, culture, identity, and hospitality remain essential elements of the tourist experience.

Finally, development does not rely solely on foreign visitors. Domestic tourism also represents significant potential. Malagasy people can discover other regions, consume locally, and participate directly in the economic activity of the territories.

The goal is therefore to make tourism a sector that benefits populations more, supports local activities, and transforms natural and cultural wealth into sustainable economic opportunities.
