The retirement home Centre La Bonté Madagascar celebrated its fifth anniversary on Saturday, October 10, at Espace Rose in Bypass. On this occasion, its founding president, Dr. Florienne Ramanandrafaliarisoa, emphasized the importance of care tailored to the health status and level of autonomy of each elderly person.
“We must take a personalized approach with the elderly,” she explained. Welcoming them into a new environment, adapting to community life, and providing daily support require special attention. Needs vary from person to person: some remain autonomous, while others require regular assistance with daily activities.
Medical monitoring is another essential component of this care. With age, the side effects of certain medications can be more pronounced, requiring rigorous treatment supervision. Hydration also deserves special attention, as the sensation of thirst often decreases with age, increasing the risk of dehydration.
Nutrition and physical activity must also be adapted to each individual’s capabilities. Appropriate diet, regular movement, and medical follow-up contribute to maintaining physical abilities and preserving autonomy.
For Dr. Florienne Ramanandrafaliarisoa, the care of the elderly cannot follow a one-size-fits-all model. It must take into account the vulnerabilities of each individual, as well as their remaining capabilities. Beyond medical care, the quality of the welcome, active listening, and respect for dignity are essential to their well-being.
