TRAFFIC – Traffic light project remains on standby

The traffic lights installed in the city center three months ago remain inactive, with the project currently at a standstill. However, the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) intends to continue with the initiative. According to an internal source yesterday, “The commune is still undecided on the power supply mode to adopt: the Jirama network or solar panels.”

The initial project under the previous CUA team planned for the deployment of seventy-five traffic lights along the capital’s major routes, connecting Ankorondrano and Antanimena to Ankadimbahoaka, passing through Analakely and Anosy. For now, only the equipment in Analakely has been installed. A municipal official confirmed that no new installations have been carried out since.

Although these traffic lights are considered essential for regulating traffic, improving flow, and ensuring pedestrian safety, their potential activation worries professionals. Driving instructors emphasize the urgent need to conduct awareness campaigns beforehand. According to them, a large portion of road users are not yet familiar with traffic light regulations, which could risk causing accidents rather than easing congestion.
