TRAFFIC – Residents of Tsarasaotra Road demand a pedestrian bridge after another accident in Soavimasoandro

A specific setup for a fast lane. Residents of Soavimasoandro are demanding the construction of a pedestrian bridge on the road connecting Tsarasaotra to Ivato. Following another fatal accident that occurred on Thursday evening in their neighborhood, they took to the streets on Friday morning to make their voices heard. Protesters erected barricades and burned tires to draw the attention of the authorities. They believe that the existing road improvements, such as pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, and road markings, are no longer sufficient to ensure safety on this axis.

On Thursday around 7:00 PM, a young woman lost her life while crossing the road with her father, who was seriously injured. According to law enforcement, the vehicle involved fled the scene. “We have been asking for a pedestrian bridge for a long time. Every day, many residents cross this road, and accidents keep happening,” the protesters complained. They are also calling for the strengthening of video surveillance systems to facilitate the identification of hit-and-run perpetrators.

According to the police, investigations are underway. Investigators from the Traffic Accident Brigade are currently analyzing surveillance footage from a nearby company to identify the vehicle in question. The protest ended following the intervention of law enforcement and discussions with local ‘fokontany’ officials. Pending potential infrastructure improvements, police officers will be deployed at the pedestrian crossing to assist residents in crossing the road.
