One hundred and four candidates for the Brevet d’études du premier cycle (BEPC) exams were missing at the roll call yesterday morning across the Toliara I school district. The absentee rate, compared to the total number of 3,703 registered candidates, stands at 2.8% this year. According to officials, this figure is lower than last year’s 4.50%.
“There are several reasons that could explain these absences. Candidates may simply decide at the last minute not to show up for the tests. A second reason is that the majority of candidates are independent, not school-enrolled, and have their own personal justifications for not attending,” explained Whega Danitsaike, head of the Toliara I school district.
Several candidates also choose to sit for the exams in other school districts, hoping for more flexible admission conditions.
Among the seven examination centers within the Toliara I school district, two autistic candidates and three hearing-impaired candidates were listed.
Efforts to combat corruption and fraud have been strengthened this year. “The Life and Earth Sciences and English exam subjects were changed at the last minute following a reported leak in Vangaindrano, in the Atsimo-Atsinanana region,” the source added.
The youngest candidate in Toliara is eleven years old, while the oldest is fifty-three. The latter is taking the exams at Lycée Laurent Botokeky.
