The limit has been crossed. With about a dozen reports of missing children every day—some of whom are later found dead and mutilated—this scourge must be tackled head-on. Whether it is a matter of political destabilization, the instigation of psychosis, or something else, the security forces must, for once, demonstrate that they are indeed serving to protect people and their property. The time has come to act, rather than merely reacting after all these senseless crimes have been committed. We would like to see the same impressive solidarity from the security forces that used to blanket the entire city and its hidden corners to curb political demonstrations. Now is the moment to demonstrate that same show of force.
We have heard the statements from the Prime Minister and the main officials in charge of security and justice. The common denominator in their speeches is: ‘We will show no tolerance toward the perpetrators of these crimes.’ Fine words are all well and good, and we have heard them time and again whenever security, traffic, public order, or state safety are shaken. But they only last for the duration of the statement.
The announcement of ‘blitz operations, police checks, patrols…’ has never been implemented on a permanent basis and has never been able to root out the evil. Intentions have never been a substitute for actions. Rapes, armed robberies, kidnappings, murders, and burglaries are part of the population’s daily life.
Declarations and good intentions are far from reassuring the public.
Controlling cars with tinted windows after having allowed them to enter and circulate resembles an impossible task, especially since the majority belong to authorities. When one knows the special privileges granted to them, it is doubtful that the measure will be effective.
A genuine policy for the security and protection of the population must be established, even if it requires passing a law. Reacting and flexing muscles have never scared off criminals. This is even more true since, most of the time, the matter is reduced to a political issue and scapegoats are sought to appease public opinion.
But the fact that the evil persists shows that there has been a casting error and that the real culprits have never been brought to justice. Time will tell.
