Madagascar made a successful start in the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III, currently being held at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone, Botswana. The Akomba secured a 3-0 victory against Namibia this Monday, confirming their status as favorites in this opening match and launching their quest for promotion to Group II in an ideal way.
Harena Voaviandraina led the way by defeating Rieke Honiball in two swift sets (6-2, 6-2). In the second singles match, the 2026 Madagascar champion, Tsantiony Iariniaina, gave Taimi Nashiku no chance, sweeping her 6-0, 6-2.
Already assured of victory, the Malagasy team concluded the encounter with a win in doubles. Elisoa Andriantefihasina and Mirindra Razafinarivo overcame the pair of Joanivia Bezuidenhout and Mari Van Schalkwyk after a more contested match (6-4, 2-6, 10-4 in the super tie-break).
This victory allows the players of captain Teddy Andrianjafitrimo to get off to an ideal start in a tough Pool C, which also includes Nigeria, Madagascar’s main competitor for qualification. Burundi completes the group.
Promotion in sight
Unfortunate finalists of the 2025 edition after a defeat against Morocco in the decisive match for promotion, the Akomba are clearly showing their ambition to finally overcome the last obstacle this year. This first success confirms the good form of the team, led by a young but already competitive squad.
The competition format includes two singles and one doubles match for each encounter. The winners of the three pools will then meet in a final phase that will award the single ticket for promotion to the Africa Group II.
After completing their first mission with authority against Namibia, the Malagasy team must now confirm their form against Burundi before the highly anticipated clash against Nigeria, which could determine the pool leader. For the Akomba, this winning start is a first step towards the goal set a year ago: to erase the disappointment of 2025 and finally secure the coveted promotion.
