RISKY TREES – Toamasina fells its royal palms

The “royal palms” on Independence Avenue, located in the Urban Commune of Toamasina, are currently being felled. This operation targets trees and branches deemed fragile and prone to falling, posing a potential threat to public road users and nearby infrastructure.

Although this species is known for its ability to withstand strong winds, some trees can become weakened and dangerous after a cyclone. “While known for their resistance to strong winds, some royal palms damaged after a cyclone now pose risks to passersby and surrounding infrastructure. Cutting operations are underway to secure Independence Avenue,” the Urban Commune of Toamasina stated in a press release yesterday.

The operations have already begun. This intervention aims to prevent accidents and enhance the safety of pedestrians on one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. “The authorities should consider removing all these palms and planting new ones to restore a better image to the city of Toamasina,” suggests Annicet Jonasy, a local resident.
