Prevention. A sanitary barrier has been set up in Maroantsetra, in the Ambatosoa region, following the discovery of a person suspected of having Mpox on board a ship arriving from Toamasina. The measure aims to prevent a potential spread of the disease in the district and surrounding areas.
The Joint Conception Organ (OMC), led by the prefect’s representative, immediately arrived on-site with health agents directed by Dr. Patino Larissa Tamby, acting medical inspector. Surveillance of passengers and crew members has been reinforced. Barrier gestures and preventive measures have also been reiterated and enforced.
This vigilance comes as Toamasina now appears to be the main epicenter of Mpox in Madagascar. Over the past four weeks, Toamasina I has recorded 121 cases, the highest number among affected districts, according to statistics from the Ministry of Public Health. Antsiranana I ranks second with 39 cases, followed by Tolagnaro with 29 cases, Antananarivo with 23 cases, and Manakara with 15 cases.
Last week, 156 confirmed cases were recorded across 20 districts, including 85 in Toamasina I, noted Professor Mamy Randria, incident manager of the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP) within the Ministry of Public Health, on Monday.
According to the latest report from the ministry, Madagascar has recorded a total of 5,196 Mpox cases, including 3,436 confirmed cases, since December 18, 2025. Among them, 2,522 people have recovered and 22 deaths have been reported. Additionally, a new case was reported in Tolagnaro on August 16.
