A second term for Hakainde Hichilema. Provisional results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia credit him with approximately 60% of the vote, with five out of 226 constituencies still to be counted. However, Mwangala Zaloumis, the chairperson of the electoral commission, stated that “these missing results are not expected to significantly influence the overall outcome of this election.”
The incumbent president, in power since 2021, leads his main opponent, Brian Mundubile, who received nearly 38% of the vote. “We are deeply touched by the trust you have placed in us,” declared “HH” after the announcement of his victory. Hundreds of his supporters, dressed in red, the color of his party, the United Party for National Development (UPND), celebrated the result in the streets of Lusaka.
The re-elected head of state faced 13 other candidates during the August 13th election, which took place in a more tense political climate than usual for Zambia. Since the return to multi-party politics in 1991, Zambia has experienced peaceful transfers of power through the ballot box. This year, the opposition denounced irregularities in the counting process, while several opposition figures were arrested before or around the time of the election. The Electoral Commission had also temporarily suspended the counting due to violence.
This re-election comes as Hakainde Hichilema highlights progress made on the economic front, particularly debt restructuring and a decline in inflation. However, the social situation remains difficult: according to the World Bank, more than 70% of the approximately 22 million Zambians live on less than three dollars a day. Zambia is Africa’s second-largest copper producer and the eighth-largest globally.
