Kidnappings are indeed occurring in Madagascar, some of which have resulted in murder, and authorities are working to put an end to them, assures Colonel Michaël Randrianirina. During a meeting with the Malagasy diaspora in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday evening, the head of state emphasized that the military, gendarmes, and police are working day and night. However, he believes that not all disappearances are caused by kidnappings. He lamented that even suicides are being presented as murders on social media.
According to him, disappearances are often amplified on social media, either by fake accounts created to destabilize the country and create psychosis, or by citizens misled by these malicious acts. He specifically denounced certain politicians who pay unemployed youth to fuel fear online. He urged the public not to follow these narratives, as it is the reaction these actors are seeking.
While insisting on a climate of psychosis deliberately instilled by opposition political factions, the head of state acknowledged the existence of kidnapping cases followed by murder. He stated that these cases are linked to sacrificial rites driven by superstition. He assured that the authorities are working to end these practices and that perpetrators will be caught sooner or later, citing examples of ongoing arrests and prosecutions. He expressed regret that Madagascar’s defense and security forces are not sufficiently equipped to intervene with greater speed.
