A 15-year-old middle school student, suspected of stealing a log, was beaten to death yesterday in the Mahazoarivo-Est neighborhood. An investigation has been opened.
The victim, Andry Rakotonirina, a 15-year-old student at a private school, was out jogging at dawn with two friends. They found logs at a construction site and took one to use as a goalpost for an improvised football game. They were caught by security guards; while his friends escaped, Andry was caught and beaten with the very log he had taken.
Severely injured, Andry was abandoned in an alleyway. Despite being rushed to the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital, he was pronounced dead. The perpetrators remain at large, and the owner of the construction site has been taken in for questioning by the police.
Local residents and the victim’s family expressed deep indignation, questioning the brutality of the act over a simple piece of wood. Police investigations are ongoing.
