The Presidency of the Refoundation of the Republic has summoned political actors and civil society forces for a consultation at Iavoloha, scheduled from September 1st to 8th. This meeting will focus on the preparation for upcoming elections.
Political parties, civil society organizations (CSOs) working in the electoral field, and other “vital forces” have been invited. To participate, entities must provide proof of legal existence. This initiative follows the political consultations initiated by the Head of State, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, since late July, aimed at accelerating the path toward elections.
Colonel Randrianirina stated on August 18th that the goal is to reach a common consensus to move forward quickly, supporting the National Independent Electoral Commission (Ceni) in this process. He reaffirmed that elections are expected to be held in 2027, with the Ceni preparing for a vote starting in July 2027, following the revision of the electoral roll.
The timeline remains tight, as the Council of Christian Churches of Madagascar (FFKM) has proposed a national consultation calendar that extends beyond May 2027. However, Colonel Thierry Rampanarivo, a senior advisor to the Refoundation, emphasized that electoral governance reforms can be conducted in parallel with the national consultation to ensure the 2027 deadlines are met.
The Iavoloha meeting is expected to build consensus on the rules and conditions for the 2027 elections, including potential debates on the sequence of the constitutional referendum and the presidential election, as well as candidate eligibility criteria.
