The 37th edition of Madajazzcar concluded with a concert bringing together Malagasy and international artists, celebrating musical diversity and the spirit of sharing.
As a music of improvisation, expression, and dialogue between instruments, jazz thrives on encounters and cultural blending. This philosophy resonated deeply during the closing concert of the 37th Madajazzcar, held last Saturday at the Analakely City Hall square. The free event was themed ‘Le Souffle en partage’ (Sharing the Breath), the guiding principle of this year’s festival, which ran from October 1st to 10th.
Throughout the afternoon, various artists took the stage, including Soa Hary, Joro J Project, Vahandanitra, Silo Trio, Mamory Jazz Band, Muthaiga Three featuring Eddie Grey, Bandy Baraka Big Band, and Monika Njava & Friends. The diverse lineup showcased the richness of jazz and its ability to bridge generations and cultures.
The festival’s commitment to accessibility was reflected in its programming across five cities: Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Toamasina, Manakara, and Toliara. In the capital, public spaces such as the Analakely City Hall square, Andohalo Garden, and the University of Antananarivo hosted free events.
The next generation also played a significant role through the ‘Tremplins Madajazzcar’ initiative. Workshops in Toamasina, Antsirabe, and Antananarivo highlighted young musicians and mentors, including Joro Rakotozafiarison, Vatsiahy Ravaloson, Tahinavibe, and Lova Ramahefason, helping to sustain the vitality of Malagasy jazz.
International collaboration was a hallmark of this edition, with support from the embassies of Germany, Switzerland, and France, alongside partners like BRED Madagasikara. Additionally, Radio Madajazzcar continues to promote these artists through its 24/7 web radio, extending the festival’s reach beyond borders.
