IMF and World Bank Autumn Meetings: Madagascar Advocates Its Cause in Bangkok

Madagascar is participating in the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, held in Bangkok. The Malagasy delegation aims to strengthen financial partnerships and seek funding for national priorities.

A lobbying operation is underway as Madagascar attends the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, taking place from October 12 to 18 in Bangkok, Thailand. The country intends to leverage this “Autumn Meeting” to defend its economic priorities and seek new financial support. The Ministry of Economy and Finance stated on LinkedIn that this event is an opportunity to consolidate financial and technical partnerships while exploring new funding and investment prospects, aligning with the State’s General Policy for Refoundation (PGE-R).

The delegation, led by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Dr. Herinjatovo Aimé Ramiarison, with the potential participation of Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, will advocate for aligning funding with national priorities, particularly economic recovery and development. Key areas include infrastructure development, energy sector reform, and climate resilience, especially regarding cyclones and droughts in the South.

The discussions in Bangkok occur against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty. Participants will address job creation, private capital mobilization, and financial stability. For Madagascar, this is a crucial opportunity to discuss debt sustainability and negotiate adjustments to performance criteria under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), particularly regarding fuel price caps, a point of contention with the IMF.

Prime Minister Rajaonarison recently emphasized the government’s commitment to building trust with international partners to streamline fund disbursement procedures, a position he may reinforce directly during the meetings.
