RUGBY XV – CLUB FUNDING – Rosa Club de l’Imerina relies on solidarity

Founded in 1960 by Gabriel Ramananjato, director of Gazety Basivava, and Jean-Louis Rakotonirina, the Rosa Club de l’Imerina (RCI) is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. This longevity testifies to the strength of this Malagasy rugby institution, originating from the working-class neighborhood of III G Hangar in Antohomadinika. This Sunday, RCI will face RCSA in the Top 20 final at the Makis stadium in Andohatapenaka with the ambition of clinching the title and continuing its athletic development.

While field results remain a priority, the leadership must tackle another challenge: funding the season. For Jean Aristide Ralaimampionona, the club’s manager, the operation of RCI relies above all on the commitment of its extended family. “Our primary income comes from membership fees. The club has nearly 250 people, including about 50 players and approximately 150 youths in our rugby school,” he explains.

RCI estimates the budget required to cover a full season is between 10 and 14 million ariary. This package covers sports equipment, jerseys, training gear, refreshments, travel, and player bonuses. It is a significant amount for an organization that lacks substantial resources.

Beyond membership fees, the club relies on the loyalty of its supporters, former players, and the diaspora, who regularly provide financial support. The main partner today is the company Imex MCEMBT, led by Maxime Lock and Claudia Rabetsivoh.

Limited financial means

However, RCI refuses to depend on a single funding source. “While waiting for sponsorship aid, we organize various operations, such as cake or meal sales. Like any organization, we must anticipate unforeseen events and diversify our revenue streams,” the manager emphasizes.

This philosophy also guides the club’s sporting project. Once a breeding ground for the Makis, featuring players such as Charles Randriatiana, Raymond Jean-Baptiste, Tiana Herizo, and Eric “Sefo” Randrianarison—former coach of the Ladies Makis Sevens—RCI is now focusing on training. Its rugby school welcomes youths of all age categories to prepare the next generation.

Jean Aristide Ralaimampionona admits, however, that means remain limited. “It wouldn’t be true to say our budget is sufficient. We operate the club with the resources we have. We hope that this final and a promotion to the elite Top 12 will offer more visibility and attract new partners.” For RCI, solidarity remains more than ever the primary driver of performance.
