The human toll of the Mpox epidemic is rising. Two deaths related to the disease were recorded last weekend, according to the latest epidemic progress report released yesterday by the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP).
“A 12-day-old infant who tested positive has passed away in the Analamanga region. Another vulnerable individual has died in the Anosy region,” reported Professor Jean de Dieu Mamy Randria, Incident Manager at COUSP.
The Mpox epidemic has claimed fourteen lives since its onset. Children and individuals living with HIV/AIDS remain the most severely affected populations.
From December 2025 to June 27, 2026, the epidemic has resulted in 3,817 reported cases, of which 2,408 have been officially confirmed. There are now 1,721 recorded recoveries. The disease continues to spread across the country, affecting a total of 69 districts.
The disease remains active in 36 districts.
On the ground, authorities and healthcare professionals are facing an invisible yet formidable enemy: disbelief.
“The disease is indeed real. The problem is that as long as people refuse to believe it, they will not protect themselves,” lamented Professor Jean de Dieu Mamy Randria.
In a video published on the Ministry of Public Health’s Facebook page, several patients share their testimonies to remind the public that the disease is very real.
Respiratory difficulties
One patient recounted that his initial symptoms, including fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes, persisted despite treatment from his primary physician. It was only when skin rashes appeared on his face that he decided to go to the Andohatapenaka Treatment and Isolation Center. Another victim explained that they contracted the virus while using public transport. In the same video, a patient suffering from severe respiratory difficulties can also be seen.
