The Amoronakona bus station is emptying of its transporters and passengers. Yesterday, only one vehicle occupied the parking lot, and the vast majority of ticket counters were vacant. Out of the eighty transport cooperatives that announced their move to this facility in June, fewer than ten are still operating there two months after its opening. Shortly after settling in this station in July, the transport cooperative connecting Antananarivo to Andramasina reversed its decision within a few days.
Most of the cooperatives still remaining in Amoronakona occupy both this station and the Andohatapenaka station or the Fasan’ny Karàna parking area in Anosizato. The presence of some cooperatives remains purely symbolic. “We had departures here at the beginning, but there are none now. To send a package or catch a departure for Fianarantsoa, you have to go to Fasan’ny Karàna,” a ticket agent confided.
Some cooperatives justify their departure by the low passenger turnout. “Passengers are used to the Fasan’ny Karàna station. Amoronakona is very far for them,” says Hery, a manager at a cooperative operating on the RN7. However, passengers traveling on the southern axis complain about having made reservations with a scheduled departure at Amoronakona, only to be told later that there were no departures from this station and they had to go to Fasan’ny Karàna. “It’s a shame. Even if it’s far, we prefer to go there because the site is quiet and secure,” testifies Angelo Zafitsara, a traveler.
Yesterday, at the boarding site, only a few people arriving from Ambatondrazaka and heading to Ambositra were present. The carrier with whom they had booked did not pick them up. Meanwhile, at Fasan’ny Karàna, development work is underway to improve the site.
