In Toamasina, the Port Sec III project is navigating between logistical imperatives and social tensions. The Autonomous Port of Toamasina (SPAT) is working to reassure the public.
The expansion of the Toamasina Multimodal Logistics and Port Platform (PMLPT) has entered a critical phase. As site clearance operations for the Port Sec III in Tsarakofafa began last week, the SPAT is attempting to reconcile infrastructure development with the management of human impact.
The Director General of the Port of Toamasina, Anicet Heritiana Randriambahoaka, addressed the families affected by house demolitions in Tsarakofafa. He stated that a relocation site has been provided, and food supplies have been distributed to assist families during this transition.
While families have expressed distress on social media, claiming to have lived on the site for decades, the SPAT maintains that it is aware of the difficulties and has deployed teams to assess individual needs. The company is providing temporary hotel accommodation for those in immediate need and is reviewing cases where families claim they were not sufficiently informed. According to project officials, discussions and awareness sessions regarding the relocation process have been ongoing since April 2024.
The Port Sec III project aims to better organize the parking and traffic of heavy goods vehicles related to port activities. Affected families will be relocated to the Port Sec II site, as the Tsarakofafa area is designated for the new infrastructure.
