ANTSIRANANA – Enelec boosts power production capacity

Enelec has announced a series of emergency measures to address the repeated power outages that have crippled Antsiranana for several days. This investment program is expected to bolster the company’s electricity production capacity. According to a press release issued by the Filatex Group yesterday regarding the city’s electricity supply crisis, a 4 MW HFO engine has already arrived in Madagascar and is currently being deployed. Phase 2 of the Diego solar project, adding 8 MW of capacity to the existing 2 MW, will be launched in the coming months. Furthermore, development of the wind farm is ongoing, with the first capacities expected to be commissioned by mid-September 2026.

In Antsiranana, prolonged load shedding is severely disrupting daily activities and hindering the local economy. Public frustration is mounting, with some residents reporting continuous blackouts lasting over 24 hours. Local fishermen are among the primary victims of this energy crisis, lamenting that their stocks of fish and seafood are perishing due to a lack of refrigeration.

Enelec explained that these outages are primarily due to a comprehensive heavy maintenance program conducted by Chelsea Énergie, the technical operator of the power plant. The statement noted that these interventions, essential for the proper functioning of the facilities, are part of an intensive upgrade program necessitated by the deferral of certain maintenance operations in previous years, against a backdrop of significant accumulated payment delays. Meanwhile, Jirama has announced the arrival of its own generator sets, which are expected to gradually increase the electricity supply in Antsiranana.
