EXHIBITION – IKM traces 85 years of Russian history through photographs

Over three decades of Russian history are brought to life through around thirty photographs currently on display at the IKM Antsahavola Cultural Center. Inaugurated this Sunday, the exhibition “85 Years of the Sovinformburo” celebrates the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Soviet Information Bureau, established on June 24, 1941, to disseminate official information from the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

Organized by representatives of African Initiative in partnership with the Russian media group Rossiya Segodnya, this retrospective is part of the cultural activities of the Russian Federation in Madagascar, aimed at strengthening historical, cultural, and human exchanges between the two countries. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation to Madagascar, Alexey Buriak, as well as several guests and cultural partners.

The photographs, sourced from the archives of Rossiya Segodnya—which includes agencies such as RIA Novosti and Sputnik—retrace several landmark events in Russian history. Visitors can discover snapshots of the 1945 Victory Parade, the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, and other iconic moments from Russia’s contemporary history.

For Alexey Buriak, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation to Madagascar, this exhibition bears witness to both the glorious hours and the trials experienced by his country. “This exhibition represents the glorious pages of our history, but also the tragic moments that our country has endured. This is what these photographs reflect,” he declared.

Beyond its historical interest, this initiative intends to foster better mutual understanding between the Malagasy and Russian people. “Today’s exhibitions are part of our desire to promote cultural dialogue through history and to strengthen the rapprochement between Russia and Madagascar. Better mutual knowledge of our two peoples gradually contributes to expanding the areas of cooperation between our two countries,” emphasized Anna Zamaraeva, representative of African Initiative in Moscow.

Through this retrospective, the organizers intend to make photography a genuine bridge between nations. By revisiting the major milestones of Russian history, this exhibition invites visitors to better understand Russia’s path while opening new perspectives for cultural dialogue and cooperation with Madagascar.
