Patrick Vieira is the new head coach of the Senegal national team. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Tuesday the appointment of the former French international, who was born in Dakar. He succeeds Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed following the Teranga Lions’ elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
At 50 years old, Patrick Vieira had been without a club since leaving Genoa in November 2025. He takes charge of a squad that must now prepare for upcoming international fixtures, notably the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with the first matches scheduled for September.
“Welcome to Senegal, Coach,” the FSF wrote on its social media channels to formalize his appointment. The Federation stated that the date of the official presentation and the next steps of his installation will be communicated at a later date.
Vieira’s main mission will be to revitalize the Teranga Lions following their 2026 World Cup campaign, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Belgium after a 3-2 loss in extra time. This elimination led the FSF to terminate Pape Thiaw’s tenure on July 12. Vieira, who has previously managed New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa, will be experiencing his first role as a national team coach.
Born in Dakar, Vieira built his international career with France, earning 107 caps and winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He is a legendary figure who played for Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Manchester City. He now arrives in a tense environment, as the Senegalese Federation is currently awaiting a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the controversial outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
