Two in one. The Malagasy capital is hosting the first edition of the Zone 7 U18 African Youth Championship. Two different competitions are on the program from August 5 to 11: indoor volleyball and beach volleyball.
The indoor volleyball championship runs from August 5 to 9 at the Palais des Sports Mahamasina. The beach volleyball championship will take place at Tanana Soa in Ambohimanga Rova on August 10 and 11. Four countries from the region will compete during these seven days. For indoor volleyball, four teams, both boys and girls, will play in a round-robin group stage. The group phase will be held from Wednesday, August 5 to Friday, August 7. The semi-finals will take place on Saturday, August 8, and the final as well as the third-place matches are scheduled for Sunday, August 9.
No team will be eliminated after the group stage. “The four men’s and women’s teams will be ranked at the end of the group stage. They will all play in the semi-finals: the first will play against the fourth, and the second and third will face each other,” explains the National Technical Director, Hasimbola Famonjena Raoelison.
The boys will start tonight at 6 p.m. against their main rivals, the Réunionese. In the girls’ category, team 1 will face the Mauritians and the second team will play against the Réunionese. Delegations from other countries arrived on Sunday and the last ones yesterday. “We, the team of the Malagasy Volleyball Federation, are doing our best for the success of this international event at home, for the honor of the country in terms of results and also organization,” specified Léa Raharimalala, president of the federation.
For the U18 zonal beach volleyball summit, “each nation will present two teams, each with players from the squads competing in the indoor volleyball tournament. The top four will qualify and play the semi-finals,” clarified the national technical head of the discipline. This regional youth beach volleyball tournament will be played over two days, Monday, August 10 and Tuesday, August 11 at Ambohimanga Rova.
