EXCHANGE – Strong ties established with foreign volunteers

“Strong bonds have been forged between the volunteers and the country,” declared Roger Charles Evina, Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), yesterday during the closing ceremony for the Loharano II volunteers, held at the Carlton Anosy Hotel.

Thirteen young Malagasy of the 2nd and 3rd generations living abroad have completed their mission to support development projects addressing needs identified by host organizations. These volunteer missions helped strengthen education programs and teacher capacity in underserved rural areas, thereby promoting better access to education. In the agricultural sector, the volunteers also introduced improved farming techniques to help farmers diversify their income sources. Another result was raising community awareness regarding watershed protection and sustainable natural resource management. “The results are visible. They have drawn closer to the communities. The communities have also learned a great deal from the volunteers,” emphasized Roger Charles Evina.

According to Tojonirina Ramarolahy, Director General of Development Partnership and Diaspora, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Loharano program addresses the legitimate aspirations of Malagasy people for development, whether they live in the country or abroad. Over 4 years, more than 40 volunteers have reached over 20,000 people.
