LANGUAGE – Mandarin opens up new opportunities

More and more young Malagasy people are turning to the Chinese language to broaden their future prospects. This trend is confirmed at the Confucius Institute of the University of Antananarivo, where 136 students received their Bachelor’s degrees in Chinese language and culture last Friday in Ankatso. These new graduates now intend to apply their skills in the professional world.

“The goal of learning Chinese is to expand my knowledge so that I am not limited to the opportunities offered only in Madagascar. That is why I chose this field, and I fully intend to continue my studies,” says Sandatiana, one of the graduates of the ‘Hiratra’ class.

“This 2026 cohort is particularly distinguished by the excellence of its results. The academic level has reached new heights this year, marked by high grades and a significant increase in the averages obtained by the top students,” according to Prisca Maroy Rasoanirina, the Malagasy director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Antananarivo.

Beyond academic excellence, the Confucius Institute confirms its attractiveness to Malagasy youth. “The figures speak for themselves: the institution has recorded a strong increase in its first-year (L1) enrollment, rising from 300 students last year to 350 for this academic year,” the director added.
