The reconstruction of the double murder of Stéphanie Nohasoavina and Vololoniaina Haingotiana Rasamison, intended to reconcile the versions of the four suspects, ended with police gunfire and the death of the suspects.
The four men, suspected of participating in the rape and murder of 21-year-old Stéphanie Nohasoavina and 17-year-old Vololoniaina Haingotiana Rasamison, were taken to Ambohimanga Rova on Saturday to clarify discrepancies in their statements. However, authorities reported that the suspects attempted to attack the police, with one trying to seize an officer’s weapon, leading the police to open fire. All four suspects were wounded and later died in the hospital.
The victims had disappeared on August 21 after going to the cinema. Surveillance footage tracked them to a black Chevrolet Cruze. Following the discovery of the vehicle on August 25, which contained bloodstains and clothing, the driver, Sitraka, was arrested. A video of the assault was reportedly found on his phone. He implicated three others—Aldo, Larry, and Ranix—who were subsequently arrested and confessed to their involvement.
Despite these confessions, inconsistencies in their accounts led to the planned reconstruction. The investigation had already revealed that the suspects had prepared weapons, including knives, brass knuckles, and a screwdriver, and used a ruse to lure the victims. The bodies of the two young women were discovered in a ravine in Ambohimanga Rova two days after their disappearance.
The deaths of the four suspects now bring an end to the judicial proceedings, leaving questions about the exact sequence of events and the precise roles of each individual unanswered.
