Russian Roulette on the Roads

Make no mistake, the title has no allusion to the tragic events of the past week; it is merely an unfortunate coincidence of words. Many people have lost their lives unintentionally, paying for faults they did not commit. It must be said: traveling has become a game of Russian roulette.

We have seen all kinds of colors, especially the color of blood, over the past few days. The accidents are increasingly atrocious, wiping out entire families in the blink of an eye. The victims are rarely at fault; it is other road users who seal their fate. It is impossible to predict where these ‘road criminals’ will strike next.

It is infuriating that some reckless drivers are not even taken into custody, and victims’ families are rarely compensated. This dark week was marked by speeding, drunk driving, poorly secured containers, faulty vehicles, and fake licenses.

The responsibility lies not only with the drivers but with society as a whole. From unsafe sidewalks and corrupt licensing processes to routine police checks that often amount to nothing more than bribery, the entire traffic system is flawed. Even the ‘kit’ trucks heading to the Deep South, which are technically non-compliant, continue to operate because they are essential for regional supply.

The entire traffic chain needs a complete overhaul. Intermittent crackdowns during holidays are insufficient. A fundamental questioning of the entire sector is required, not just superficial measures.
