The Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni) asserts that elections will proceed despite the current context. It calls for a transparent electoral process free from corruption.
During the signing of an agreement between the Ceni and the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (Bianco) in Alarobia on Wednesday, Thierry Rakotonarivo, President of the Ceni, denounced the fact that electoral corruption is being downplayed. For him, it remains one of the main challenges to the credibility of the elections.
“Given what we have experienced, corruption during elections seems to have been minimized. It is unfortunately becoming a habit, as we almost never see people convicted for such acts,” lamented Thierry Rakotonarivo, emphasizing the importance of Bianco’s involvement in helping the Ceni clean up the electoral process. The collaboration formalized on Wednesday aims to ensure an honest and transparent electoral process, from the registration of voters on electoral lists to the proclamation of provisional results.
According to the Ceni president, corruption can occur at all stages of the electoral process, particularly during the establishment of electoral lists, the campaign, the filing of candidacies, on election day, and during the counting of votes.
“Electoral corruption is not just a violation of the law; it constitutes a true destruction of the nation and an injustice toward the Malagasy people,” he insisted.
Acknowledging that many challenges remain, Thierry Rakotonarivo concluded that “no sustainable development can be hoped for and no power can be stable without an effective fight against corruption.” Nevertheless, the president of the electoral body assures that, regardless of the context, the elections will take place.
“Whatever circumstances the country is going through, only the ballot box will allow us to decide,” declared the Ceni president. According to Thierry Rakotonarivo, rigorous preparation for the elections remains essential to ensure respect for the electoral calendar and to allow citizens to freely choose the leaders who will have the responsibility of guiding the future of Madagascar as a democratic state.
