The port of Ankify has been overwhelmed since last Sunday. At least three hundred vehicles, including Sprinter bush taxis, have used the ferry in less than two days since Monday. Long queues of cars and traffic jams formed in front of the port as everyone vied to board first, marking an unprecedented level of congestion at this major landing stage.
Transport fares for vehicles on the ferries have also increased, causing significant disruptions around the port over the past few days. Young participants and users have faced intense price speculation. The rate for a one-way trip for a Sprinter has risen to 500,000 ariary, while bush taxis or shorter vehicles are charged 400,000 ariary.
All-terrain vehicles or 4x4s were required to pay 200,000 ariary for the crossing to Nosy Be. Passenger fares for a speedboat or ferry are 8,000 ariary per person, compared to 20,000 ariary per person for a hull or speedboat. Those who took semi-fast catamarans paid 15,000 ariary per person. Maritime shuttles and ferries operated continuously at Ankify to ensure the crossing of thousands of participants. Some latecomers even slept on-site on Tuesday night while waiting to reach Nosy Be.
“A committee has been set up to organize the transport of young participants on the vessels. Solutions have been implemented to resolve the issue. Regarding the security of the reception sites, numbers are available, and law enforcement officers are mobilized in case of any incident. All valuables and money must be kept secure,” stated Pastor Tsiriniaina Rabarijaona, National President of the STK youth branch of the FJKM.
