FINANCING – Remittances from the African diaspora to their home countries reach approximately $124 billion in 2025

According to the ‘Sending Money Home’ report by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), remittances from migrants to Africa have grown significantly over the last decade, reaching approximately $124 billion in 2025. This growth has outpaced the increase in the migrant population, making remittances an increasingly vital source of funding for African households.

The African migrant population grew by nearly 32% during the study period to reach nearly 46 million, while remittance flows increased by 86%. Notably, more than half of Africans living abroad reside within the continent, making Africa the primary destination for intra-African transfers.

Egypt and Nigeria remain the top recipients. Egypt received approximately $41.5 billion in 2025, followed by Nigeria with $22.8 billion, Morocco with $13.7 billion, Ethiopia with $7.1 billion, and Kenya with $5 billion. These five countries account for nearly three-quarters of all remittances received by Africa.

For Madagascar, the report indicates that the country received approximately $406 million in 2025, equivalent to 10% of its exports and about 2% of its GDP. This represents a 36% increase compared to the reference period. The average cost of a transfer to Madagascar is estimated at 5.3%.

The report highlights that while mobile money has helped reduce transfer costs, the average cost of sending $200 to Africa remains at 7.2%, still above the international target of 3%. IFAD emphasizes the need for better financial services and investment mechanisms to channel diaspora savings into productive projects, while noting that remittances cannot replace public investment or social protection.
