They set off with the hope of obtaining their Baccalaureate, but the journey to the exam center turned into a tragedy. Nineteen students from a private high school in Dabolava, in the Menabe region, were involved in a traffic accident while traveling to Miandrivazo to take their Baccalaureate exams. Six of them, seriously injured, were ultimately unable to take the tests. Four others, who were hospitalized but returned in time, were granted special exam sessions.
The accident occurred on July 19, around 2:00 PM, about fifty kilometers from Miandrivazo on a particularly dilapidated stretch of road. The candidates had chartered a vehicle for the trip. The toll is heavy. Nine students, slightly injured, were able to continue their journey to the Saint-Pierre private high school in Miandrivazo, where they participated in the exams normally. The other ten were evacuated to a hospital in Antsirabe to receive appropriate care.
Among the latter, four were able to return to the exam center after their hospitalization. However, their late return caused them to miss certain tests. According to the center head in Miandrivazo, Célin Daudet Tovohery, three candidates arrived after the start of the philosophy exam, while another could not attend either of the two tests on the first day. Given this situation, special exams were granted to them this Friday: philosophy for the four, and English for the one who arrived in Miandrivazo on Tuesday morning. The other six candidates, who were seriously injured, had to give up on the exam.
According to the center head, some of these candidates suffered arm fractures, head wounds, or head trauma. Their medical care was the priority, but they were still able to reach Miandrivazo to continue the exams. Their determination not to give up despite the circumstances earned them a special session. This exceptional situation highlights the difficulties faced by some candidates, who are forced to travel long distances on sometimes precarious road infrastructure to reach exam centers.
