Weekends in Toliara are being utilized by young people to develop life skills, as they seek to chart their own paths toward success.
Olivier Fanomezantsoa, a member of the youth association ‘Tanora Mamiratra Toliara’, spends his Saturdays singing in a choir and his Sunday afternoons attending personal development classes. He explains that they cover themes such as self-knowledge, self-esteem, life skills, goal setting, and emotional intelligence, alongside values like solidarity and faith.
Like Olivier, many young people are eager to succeed, learning how to build positive relationships with family and the community, as well as how to navigate academic choices and personal challenges. Entrepreneurship is also a major interest; 21-year-old Félicia, a member of the same association, notes that she is studying management and economics at university while using her Sundays to gain the personal development skills not always provided in formal education.
Patricia Onisoa, a recent high school graduate, attended a study and employment fair at the University of Toliara, where she was inspired by young female entrepreneurs. She expressed a strong desire to follow in their footsteps and become a business leader.
Various organizations, including youth associations, the Lions Club, and the Junior Chamber International (JCI), are using weekends to host meetings that help young people stay focused on their studies and learn how to start ventures with available resources. Lanto Rakotarivelo, founder of the ‘Académie des bâtisseurs’ (Builders’ Academy), emphasizes that they train children through art, public speaking, and workshops to become responsible citizens.
For these young people, weekends are a time to nourish the mind and conscience, complementing the academic knowledge they acquire during the week, with many also dedicating their Sundays to religious practice.
