ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE FASHION – Thirteen designers combine elegance and responsibility

Reconciling elegance with environmental responsibility is the challenge set for thirteen Malagasy designers by the Institut français de Madagascar (IFM). Through the fourth edition of its Ethical and Sustainable Fashion program, the institution aims to demonstrate that creativity can align with more environmentally friendly practices. The creations of the selected stylists have been on display in Analakely since yesterday and will remain until October 31, ahead of several events that will determine the winner of this edition.

Continuing from the third edition held earlier this year, the program supports designers pre-selected in the previous round. They have benefited from training tailored to this year’s theme, focusing on four natural fibers: linen, wool, cotton, and silk. Through these materials, participants are invited to explore creative possibilities while highlighting the richness of Madagascar’s textile heritage. “Four materials, thirteen stories, and thirteen ways to reinvent heritage to better design the silhouettes of tomorrow,” emphasizes the Institut français de Madagascar.

The exhibition also features wild silk scarves woven by the Zafimaniry community, showcasing traditional textile craftsmanship. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, designers must integrate environmental issues into their approach, in a fashion sector that is among the most polluting. The program thus intends to encourage creation that combines aesthetic research, the promotion of natural materials, and consideration of its environmental impact.

The exhibition marks the first step of this creative adventure. The thirteen stylists will then present their collections during a first fashion show today at the Café de la Gare in Soarano. Following this presentation, the jury will select six finalists for the remainder of the competition. They will receive coaching sessions and additional training before participating in the grand finale, scheduled for October 30 at the IFM.

The winner will receive a trip to France in 2027, sponsored by Air France and the IFM. They will also benefit from an immersion program in the world of French fashion, which is internationally renowned. This prospect extends the program’s ambition: to support designers in their development while encouraging fashion that combines textile identity, creativity, and responsibility.
