Agriculture, blue economy, renewable energy, sustainable tourism, circular economy, and sanitation: several sectors linked to the ecological transition have been identified as areas capable of creating new professional opportunities for young people in Madagascar. A working week dedicated to the development of green jobs is being held in Antanimena, with a focus on training, entrepreneurship, and access to financing.
The work is structured around three priorities: green infrastructure, green jobs, and green income. The goal is to prepare young people, as well as women and local communities, for activities related to the ecological transition and to facilitate their access to sources of income.
A training-of-trainers session is also on the agenda for this week of discussions. It is intended to help prepare the necessary skills for emerging professions in sectors related to the protection and enhancement of natural resources.
“There will be training programs that will allow young people to face the ecological transition right now. These are sectors in which they will be able to undertake business in a legal and professional framework, while above all contributing to the protection of natural resources,” explains Heriniaina Rufin Zamany, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
Beyond training, the discussions focus on the conditions for transforming these skills into professional and income-generating activities. The development of youth entrepreneurship, the mobilization of funding, and the involvement of the private sector are thus among the main lines of work.
At the end of the five-day exchange, a calendar is to be established to translate the main decisions of the workshop into concrete actions. The challenge is to match training with the needs of the identified sectors and to facilitate the transition from acquired skills to the creation of activities and jobs.
This initiative is part of the project “Strengthening policies and capacities for green jobs for youth in Africa and the Caribbean,” funded by the United Nations Development Account (UNDA). It brings together the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNICEF, the private sector, training institutions, youth organizations, and a delegation from Senegal.
