A major first. Colonel Michaël Randrianirina is preparing to participate in the United Nations General Assembly for the first time. This trip marks a new stage in the ‘Refoundation of the Republic’ government’s desire to be present on the international stage.
As the leader indicated upon his return from France and Belgium last week, these trips are intended to affirm that the Malagasy state is a trustworthy partner and that there is a government that is working. After the International Space Summit in Paris, the UN Summit in New York will be the second international event the senior officer will attend this month.
Colonel Randrianirina’s address at the UN will provide global visibility for the Refoundation government. It will also be an opportunity to make Madagascar’s voice heard on global issues, such as the war in the Middle East and its impact on oil prices, as well as climate change, as the Great Island relies on climate funding to accelerate its energy transition.
The 81st session opened on September 8, with the general debate taking place from September 22 to 26. While the African Union has excluded Madagascar, the UN has not imposed sanctions, though it expressed reservations following the military takeover on October 14, 2025.
The President is expected to meet the diaspora in New Jersey on September 23, but must return before September 25 for the state ceremony commemorating the events of September and October 2025. This timing is significant, as the country is once again facing power and water shortages, similar to the tensions that led to the political shift a year ago. While international recognition is important, the real challenge for the government remains domestic: addressing governance, corruption, and basic public services.
