On the TVM set yesterday, the Minister of the Interior and Decentralization affirmed that the State is prepared to organize elections in 2027. Funds for this purpose have been allocated to the CENI (Independent National Electoral Commission).
The State is staying the course. According to an interview with Velonjara Rakotonandrasana, Minister of the Interior and Decentralization, on the public channel TVM yesterday, the 2027 elections remain on the State’s agenda. The minister stated that the ‘Refoundation’ government is ready for the polls and that a budget has been earmarked for the CENI. He emphasized that a referendum will inevitably follow the national consultation process.
This stance aligns with the commitments of Head of State Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to hold elections in 2027, describing it as a personal promise. While the government is working against the clock, the minister noted that political consultations are underway, with conclusions expected this November, which will pave the way for a new legal framework for the elections.
Despite official optimism, the national consultation process led by the FFKM (Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar) is facing delays, with resolutions not expected until after May 2027. This timeline creates a tight window for organizing the presidential and constitutional elections before the end of the year. The minister clarified that the governance of the country will be determined during these consultations, which will serve as the basis for a new Constitution.
Regarding administrative progress, the Minister highlighted the biometric registration of the population. To date, nearly seven million Malagasy citizens aged 18 and over have been registered. This initiative aims to reform civil status management and will eventually serve as a database for the electoral roll, with a target of ten million registrations by July 2027.
